Additional Information

I began my political career in 2011 when I won a By-Election in my local ward of Harworth, quickly followed by a Local Election the following year. I have since served as both a district councillor for this ward, and as Cabinet Member for Finance and Property.

My specific cabinet responsibility meant that I and Bassetlaw District Council were faced with over a decade of government austerity, resulting in numerous service reviews, a slimmer senior management team, and a reduced budget operating under increasing pressure – challenging, difficult times. I am proud that during this time, all services to residents were maintained and each year a balanced budget was delivered.

My professional career was spent in the NHS. My work as a nurse, midwife, and health visitor introduced me to the stark reality of life and the hardships facing people in the community; it was this experience that confirmed my political views. My progression into NHS management, and especially experience gained of budget management, gave me an understanding of finance that proved to be of benefit in my cabinet role.

I was born in Harworth and have lived here most of my life, along with my extended family and many friends. Harworth is my home, my community; in past years I saw it lose three major employers, changing it from a large thriving village to a redundant mining community, with all the problems associated with deprivation.

I have worked hard to help, with others, bring about positive change and improvements to what is now a developing town with a growing population; for this I received the British Empire Medal.  The combination of my role as a district councillor with that as Chair of Harworth and Bircotes Town Council helped developed my knowledge and understanding of how best to help my community, and how to progress the agenda for future improvements.
